General Elections 2008 ‑ Citizens’ Agenda and Policy Commitments of Political Parties
Working with the public representatives and political parties constitute one of the core areas of work of CRCP. We are working to create and sustain a vibrant interface between civil society organizations, think thanks and political parties to promote pro-people governance and equitable development in Pakistan.
The citizens expect that political parties will bring visible improvement in the lives of common people after coming into power in 2008 elections. This, of course, can be achieved only if political parties come up with clear and need-driven policy commitments. In this direction, manifestos of political parties provide the guiding principles and party line on key social issues. However, their policy commitments as presented in the manifestos are too broad for a voter and not easy to translate into concrete policy actions.
CRCP In collaboration with Institute of Social and Policy Sciences (ISPS), has undertaken a review of the party manifestos and identified core policy areas that need explicit party commitments in select areas. CRCP believes that this initiative will help political parties to present their positions in a more articulated manner. Besides, this initiative will help voters to make an informed choice while casting their votes.
CRCP has engaged political parties to seek their policy commitments on the challenges identified in the Policy Commitment Charts (links provided below). We are in the process of collecting response of the major political parties whether they will implement the needed policy actions. The responses will be shared for informed voting decisions, and later, for holding political parties responsible for their performance after general elections 2008
