Must to Stop Corruption
On the occasion of the International Anti-Corruption Day, CRCP emphasized the need to combat corruption in a concerted way by promoting transparency and making accountability essential elements of all governance processes. Mr. Abrar Hafeez, the Secretary General of CRCP lauded the initiative of the UNO to observe December 9 as Anti-corruption Day. He added that this step would mark the importance of eradication of corruption from the societies nationally and internationally to achieve a just, fair, equitable and transparent socio-economic system.
Mr. Abrar Hafeez said that prevalence of corruption was the notorious reason for the under development and poverty of less developed countries. The corrupt practices of public officials and political governments are the biggest drains on public money and national exchequer that are the trust of the people. CRCP stresses the need for institutional reforms aimed at achieving strengthened fair and transparent accountability mechanisms to fight endemic corruption in our society.
CRCP hails that combating corruption has become an international agenda as corruption is such a curse on a society that puts ominous effects on the political and social institutions, establishment of rule of law and subsequently overall well being of the common man and economy of a nation. In this regard, the operationalization of UNO convention on Corruption in letter and spirit is quite vital. The permanent commemoration of December 9 as Anti corruption day would always mark the importance of fighting corruption for achieving a fair and equitable society.
While appreciating the government’s efforts to put in place regulatory and accountability mechanisms to combat corruption, Mr. Hafeez, emphasized the need to use these mechanism and. He also highlighted the issues of lack of capacity on the part of citizens to become effective partner in anti-corruption efforts. He pressed upon the government to take steps to facilitate citizen to be partners in the global campaign against corruption. He said that freedom of information Ordinance, 2002 is an effective tool in the hands of the common citizens for the promotion of a culture of transparency and accountability in Pakistan and needs to be used by the citizens.
