Islamabad: Consumer Rights Commission of Pakistan (CRCP) has condemned the sale of underweight products by 15 ghee mills terming it "unfair trade practice." It was ironic that consumers were being cheated, as they could not get the real value of product for their money. From 50 to 410 grams shortage per container was noted in different brands in a recent study undertaken by Weights and Measures Department of ministry of industries. CRCP demanded appropriate action against the ghee mills, which were involved in selling low-weight products of ghee and cooking oil in market.
CRCP Secretary General Mian Abrar Hafeez, while quoting a report of the Weights and Measures Department, said that most of the ghee mills were selling underweight products in market to their consumers. An inspection team of the Department inspected a total of 44 brands of various ghee mills, of which 23 brands measured short of the net weight mentioned on the container.
Giving the details of the report, Mr. Abrar Hafeez said that 9 brands were found underweight being sold by 7 ghee mills in NWFP. The Spinzer Ghee (5kg), a brand of M/S Spinzer Ghee Mills (Pvt) Ltd, Industrial Estate, Hayat Abad, Peshawar was short by 200 grams, Kohinoor (5kg) of Bilour Ghee Mills Ltd, Industrial Estate Hayat Abad Peshawar, was short by 120 grams and 2.5 kg Kohinoor brand of the same mill was short by 410 grams. Gulab Banaspati (5kg) of the same mill contained 50 grams less than the net weight. Other mills selling short measured products include Sohail Ghee Mills Ltd., Peshawar (Saqib Banaspati (5kg) short by 100 grams), Family Ghee Mills, Haripur (Family Banaspati (5kg) short by 50 grams), Rahat Ghee Mills, D.I. Khan (Rahat Banaspati (5kg) short by 100 grams), Kohinoor Shahzad Ghee Mills, Swabi (Kohinoor Shahzad (5kg) short by 70 grams), and Bara Ghee Mills, Khyber Agency (Khushal (16kg) short by 100 grams).
In Punjab, Gul Banaspati (5kg) of Gul Banaspati Mills, Chiniot was short by 100 grams and Anmole (5kg) of Anmole Oil Mills, Hassan Abdal was short by 100 grams. In Sindh, 12 brands of 7 mills were found underweight. Karim Ghee and Oil Mills, Karachi (Karim Ghee (16) kg short by 200 grams, Karim ghee (5kg) short by 300 grams, Lazzat (5kg) short by 220 grams), Omar Bilal Industires, Ltd (Dawn (5kg) short by 320 grams, Dawn (2.5kg) short by 150 grams, Hassan Banaspati (5kg) short by 320 grams, Hassan Banaspati (2.5 kg) short by 150 grams, AL- Hamad Ghee Industries (Al-Noor Kohinoor (5kg) short by 100 grams), Shadab Kohinoor Oil Industries (Shadab (5kg) short by 50 grams), Qismat Oil Mills (pvt) Ltd,( Qismat (5kg) short by 300 grams, Qismat (2.5 kg) short by 200 grams), and Farhan Oil Products, (Sehath (5kg) short by 350 grams).
