Consumer Rights Commission of Pakistan (CRCP) is implementing a project on “Improving Women’s Access to Justice at Local Level” under European Union’s EIDHR Micro-Projects Program. This project aims to enhance women access to justice, through their legal empowerment and strengthening of legal institutions, so that they are able to seek justice against grievances, which they have as consumers of various goods and services, in relation to both government agencies and market.
The idea of this project comes from the realization that Pakistan is a heavily legislated country but it remains without significant dividends for citizens, as far as access to justice is concerned. Despite the fact that a vast legal system is in place to disburse justice, a grieved citizen finds it very difficult, if not impossible, to access a legal institution, which could provide affordable and timely relief. This is equally valid for accessing justice against grievances, which citizens incur as consumers of products and services, which are supplied by both government departments and market. The situation is dismally disheartening when looked from the perspectives of women.
Under this project, CRCP shall provide information and training to women in four union councils of Rawalpindi district, two urban (Dhoke Kashmirian & Dhoke Kala Khan) and two rural (Girja and Chak Jalal Din). For this purpose, four ‘Women Lead Groups’ will be formed in these union councils. In addition to their training to access legal forums for redress of their grievances as consumers, CRCP is going to launch a campaign for registration of complaints of the community members.
