Commemoration
of
World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2005

World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) is observed on March 15 every year to highlight the significance of consumer rights and its protection all over the world. Consumer Right Commission of Pakistan (CRCP) organized number of events to commemorate WCRD with specific reference to theme of the day, which was “Consumer Say No to GMOs”.
National
Walk
CRCP organizes national walk every year to commemorate WCRD. This year CRCP
organized 7th national walk on March 13 in Islamabad, in connection with the
Day. A large number of citizens belonging to different walks of life participated
in the walk. At the end of the walk, Mian Abrar Hafeez, Secretary General
CRCP and speakers from other organizations highlighted state of consumer rights
and consumer protection laws in Pakistan. Apart from health and environmental
hazards of GMOs and its black marketing, they also spoke about performance
of the civic agencies in delivery of services, environmental degradation and
delay in implementation of biosafety guidelines. About 100 people from Rawalpindi
also participated in the walk.
Talk
on “GMOs, Food Security and Consumer Protection”
CRCP organized a talk on March 15 in collaboration with Sustainable Development
Policy Institute (SDPI) at CRCP House Islamabad. The topic of the talk was
“GMOs, Food Security and Consumer Protection”. Mr. Mazhar Siraj,
Research Fellow CRCP, and Dr. Shahid Zia, Executive Director Lok Sanjh Foundation,
gave presentation on “GMOs and Consumer Protection in Pakistan”
and “GMOs and Food Security” respectively followed by active discussion
by participants.

Programme
Letters were sent to managing directors of Pakistan Television Corporation
(PTV) and other TV channels to organize session on “GMOs and Consumer
Health”. PTV organized a session on March 15 in News Morning on the
said topic in which Mr. Mazhar Siraj, Research Fellow CRCP, participated and
highlighted the theme of WCRD.

Media Campaign
Letters were sent to all English and Urdu newspapers to highlight the WCRD.
A letter by Mr. Muhammad Anwar, Research Assistant CRCP, was published in
English daily “DAWN” on March 17, titled “World Consumer
Rights Day”.
