World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2006

“World Consumer Rights Day” is observed globally, on March 15 each year, with the objective to accentuate the significance of consumer protection. Consumer Rights Commission of Pakistan (CRCP) observed the Day with zeal and zest and organized a number of events on the theme of the Day, which was “Energy: Sustainable Access for All”.
TV Programmes
Letters were sent to different television channels to organize talk shows and programmes on the theme of this year’s World Consumer Rights Day. PTV World organized a talk on March 15 in News Morning on the World Consumer Rights Day, in which Mr. Abrar Hafeez, Secretary General CRCP, represented CRCP and highlighted the theme of the day. Geo TV interviewed Mr. Mazhar Siraj, Research Fellow CRCP, at CRCP House Islamabad. During the interview Mr. Siraj highlighted the issue of adulteration of petrol and petroleum products in Pakistan.
Seminar
CRCP organized a seminar on March 15, 2006 at Hotel Holiday Inn Islamabad to highlight the consumer issues in energy sector, in Pakistan. The seminar was attended by people representing different walks of life. It was chaired by Ms. Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting. While talking on the occasion she stated that government was conscious of the growing energy needs of the country and was working to provide inexpensive, high quality and environment friendly energy resources to consumers. Mr Mazhar Siraj, Research Fellow of CRCP gave presentation on consumer issues in energy sector. Mr. Aftab Alam of CRCP gave presentation on new developments in energy regulations in Pakistan. Among the other speakers were Barrister Khailq-u-Zaman, Mr. Azam Ali Khan, and Managing Director of Pakistan Council for Renewable Energy Technologies (PCRET) and Mr. K. M. Zubair of National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON).At the concluding session of the seminar a vigorous discussion by the participants took place in which a number of suggestions were provided.

Stall of CRCP Publications
CRCP also arranged a stall at Hotel Holiday Inn Islamabad, on March 15, 2006 at the event of World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD). This stall was a part of the awareness-raising activities of CRCP and it held a large number of CRCP publications on various issues relevant to consumer rights. The stall attracted a large number of citizens from different walks of life.

Launching of Poster
CRCP launched a poster on the event of World Consumer Rights Day to draw citizens’ attention towards energy issues in the country. This poster was launched with the collaboration of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under the Global Environment Facility - Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP).
Placing Banners
On the WCRD to sensitize people about the issues of greater concern to them as consumers of energy and to encourage massive action of people for the solution of consumer problems, CRCP hoisted a number of banners at different places in Islamabad the capital city of Pakistan.
Print Media Coverage
Letters were sent to English and Urdu newspapers to highlight the WCRD. A letter by Rizwana Shabbir, Research Assistant CRCP, was published in English daily “DAWN” on March 17, titled “Consumer Rights”. With that seminar organized by CRCP on WCRD also got significant coverage in leading English and Urdu newspapers of Pakistan.
